It might make you cringe to think about how much garbage from an event bypasses recycle bins and gets thrown straight into the trash, only to cease function as just another piece of waste in a landfill.

Flip the Switch
One flip down, it's not so hard!
Travis Roemhild
Everyone is guilty of doing it, but some people don't care when they do do it (or in this case, don't do it.) When you leave a room for minutes, hours, or even days, make sure everything is turned off. It conserves energy and lowers that pesky electricity bill.

On more than one occasion, I have been sitting in my room doing something constructive and I can hear my roommates watching TV in the living room. At some point in time, I hear the front door slam but the TV is still going. I walk out to check and sure enough they left it on. Come on people, how hard is it to push a button on a remote or flip a light switch when you leave a room?

There are other situations too. I know it is annoying to have to turn on the computer every time you need to use it but turning it off when you leave the house will save you energy, there is no question about it.

Turn off surge protectors if you leave for an extended period of time

Other things you can turn off to conserve energy: your surge protector, ceiling fan, kitchen and porch lights, pretty much anything you aren't using should be turned off if you want to conserve as much energy as you can. Think about what you are using and what you aren't, it could save you more than you think.
