Part I: Toilets that Make a Difference
One popular demonstration at the Green Building Expo featured Caroma’s dual-flush toilet, created to decrease household water consumption. Tom Thor, a representative for the Australian company committed to conserving the world’s natural resources, shared with others how the toilet works and why it makes sense.

“The Caroma is one of the first and best flushing dual toilets on the market and they were actually developed 33 years ago in Australia,” Thor said. “One of the biggest differences between the Caroma and the others is the trap, most toilet traps are two and a quarter inches, but this is a four-inch trap, so it flushes twice as much, but with half as much water.”

Within a year, a single household of four people can flush more than 36,000 gallons of water down the toilet, Thor said. Caroma has dedicated itself to finding a solution to this problem by improving a toilet’s flushing performance. Rather than sacrifice the act of flushing, Caroma has created a two-button flushing system that utilizes and saves water with each flush.

Using this water-saving fixture, a dual-flush toilet can save up to 40 percent more water than the average toilet, Thor said.

Another advantage to the Caroma dual-flush toilet is its utilization guarantee for life.

“If it ever leaks or malfunctions, we will give you another one,” Thor said.
