It might make you cringe to think about how much garbage from an event bypasses recycle bins and gets thrown straight into the trash, only to cease function as just another piece of waste in a landfill.

Price and taste differences of the wine

Cost

PHOENIX — Organic wine is often plagued with the misconception that it costs more than non-organic wine. The organic-only stores often seem to be more expensive. In wine's case, it's only partly true.

"I see more and more they (the prices) are coming together," said Sharon Webster, cellar master at AJ's Fine Foods.

"Typically it is more expensive," said Danny Hall, wine sommelier at The Melting Pot. "I'm not going to say that's always the case."

Going organic is a very difficult and expensive process for wine producers. Going through the certification process is tough and all the changes to become organic can be pricey at the beginning of the process.

"It's not as cost effective as it is to make products in an inorganic method," said Hall. "Whatever it costs you to make something is always going to influence the cost at which you sell it for."

Where an organic wine is made can have a very large impact on the cost of the wine in the U.S.

"It costs a lot less to make wine in Chile, than in Napa Valley," Hall said. "Land is cheaper and you can get cheaper labor legally in Chile, so it'll be cheaper-costing wine."

Taste

"Organic wine I don't feel has a significant taste difference," Webster said.

Hall agreed with Webster, saying, "In terms of taste, there really is no difference."

Ultimately making the grape organic has no immediate change, based on taste or texture. The difference is going to have to be in the person's belief system.

"People are coming in looking for what they want," said Adam Schaubroeck, sales representative at Action Wine.

Everyone has a different pallet for tastes, so some organic wines are going to taste better than others just like the way they do for inorganic wines.
