It might make you cringe to think about how much garbage from an event bypasses recycle bins and gets thrown straight into the trash, only to cease function as just another piece of waste in a landfill.

Differences between the wines and getting organic

PHOENIX — There is really no big difference in the way an organic wine looks and feels when compared to a normal wine.

"I don't really have a preference," said Danny Hall, wine sommelier at The Melting Pot. "In terms of taste there really is no difference."

Just like other wines, there are a lot of differences in the types of wines between reds and whites and blush. There are many different categories in each of those colors, and price makes a big difference in each wine.

"You can get low-end organic wines or you can get high-end organic wines, but it never really affects my decision when choosing a wine," Hall said.

Going organic

There are a lot more organic wines on the market today than any other organic liquor. Webster said there are a lot of companies that make organic wines and don't even go through the process of getting them certified.

Webster stated that it is difficult to get certified organic in America. Not only that but she said there are a completely different set of standards in other countries that do not carry over to the United States.

Becoming organic can be very expensive and can increase the price on the wine itself.

"America is also one of the hardest countries to get certified in," said Webster.

The process of becoming organic can take a long time, and there are a lot of details that must be followed over several years before a company can claim fully-organic status.

"All your neighbors will need to be organic as well," said Webster.

Webster added that this is what makes it difficult for a lot of companies to become certified organic in the wine business. There are a lot of very close harvests and the same water is used at times as well as pesticides in the air, she said.

For these reasons Webster said there are a lot of companies that become organic but do not go through the steps to get certified, or they are certified in another country but don't go through the process when they come to America.
