Street talk
TUCSON, Ariz. — The biannual Fourth Avenue Street Fair took place April 4-6. While the fair is a great place to shop for unique trinkets and grab a massive fried meal with a giant lemonade, it’s an equally great experience for people watching.
I interviewed some spectators from the weekend’s fair and found out about their stance on environmentalism. ![]() Occupation: UPS branch manager Do you consider yourself an environmentalist? At heart. Why? I take the extra effort, I try to never use plastic bags when I shop. I try to be as small of a consumer as possible. What’s the greenest part of your lifestyle? I try to consume as little plastic and paper products as possible. What’s the least green element of your life? I drive a car. Maybe not having a compost, I have an apartment, so I don’t have that option though. Transportation to work? I normally bike to work. ![]() Occupation: University of Arizona library employee Do you consider yourself an environmentalist? I consider myself to be very green. Why? I don’t eat any animal products, I pick up litter and even though I smoke cigarettes, I never throw them on the ground, my pockets are always filled with butts. What’s the greenest part of your lifestyle?Aside from not littering and recycling I clean up a lot of trash I see in my neighborhood. What’s the least green element of your life? Driving, consuming. I eat fast food. You can’t go to a fast food place without getting all the extra paper. Transportation to work? Unfortunately I have to drive to work. Motivation for living green? I appreciate what the earth has given to me. Cause you wish more people supported? People need to get over this whole big, fast car thing. All these U of A kids with their convertibles and these V-8 and big trucks are killing gas mileage. Just because you have the money to afford gas doesn’t mean you should attack the Earth like that. ![]() Occupation: Student at the Rochester Institute of Technology Do you consider yourself an environmentalist? Sure. I try to do my part. Why?I recycle a lot and I don’t own a car. What’s the greenest part of your lifestyle?I bike everywhere. What’s the least green element of your life?I throw away a lot of spray paint cans and other stuff I should be recycling or at least disposing of properly. I think what I do is illegal actually. Transportation to work? I bike everywhere. Cause you wish more people supported? I really don’t have one to tell you the truth. ![]() Occupation: Attorney Do you consider yourself an environmentalist? Definitely. Why?I recycle as much as possible and I care about the environment. What’s the greenest part of your lifestyle? I bring reusable bags to the grocery store whenever I go shopping. What’s the least green element of your life? I own an SUV and a BMW. Both are not the most eco-friendly cars. Transportation to work? I drive to work every day. Cause you wish more people supported? I just wish people were more aware of their effects on our environment. |
