It might make you cringe to think about how much garbage from an event bypasses recycle bins and gets thrown straight into the trash, only to cease function as just another piece of waste in a landfill.

Want to save the earth? Yarrow has 1,001 ways
TUCSON, Ariz. — When it comes to saving the earth, sustainable living expert Joanna Yarrow knows that sometimes it is the littlest things that can make the biggest difference.
People can save an average of 10 quarts of water every day by turning off the faucet while brushing their teeth, according to Yarrow. That can add up to 500,000 quarts over a lifetime. ![]() Courtesy of Chronicle Books Recycling one glass bottle can save enough energy to power a television for 90 minutes. And because glass is easier to recycle than plastic, Yarrow encourages choosing glass over plastic. Those are three of the tips United Kingdom-based Yarrow included in her new book 1,001 Ways to Save the Earth, one of more than a dozen green-themed books on the shelves at bookstores across the city. The eye catching book has 384 colorful pages, complete with illustrations, that cover everything from backyard beekeeping (tip 12) to homemade face masks (tip 867). And while each earth-saving way is straight to the point, each is informational including tip 108 on what Yarrow calls saline solution. "Rather than using a commercial product, use salt to draw out red wine and fruit juice stains," Yarrow writes. The solution eliminates the Earth endangering chemicals found in common household products. From skimming through 1,001 Ways to Save the Earth, it is apparent that Yarrow did her research. Though she does include some commonly known tips like turning off appliances that are not in use (tip 850), or using solar powered items (tip 851), most are creative. Yarrow suggests in tip 315 that instead of banking with a company that backs oil suppliers, find another that is more on target with green issues. Or suggested in tip 485, use an affinity credit card "that makes a small donation to charity every time you use it." By thinking for easy ways that common people can save the Earth with little effort, Yarrow has authored an effective tool in the push toward going green. If you want to learn more about simple ways to do your part in saving the planet, from ditching paper cups (tip 915) to freecycling (tip 782), pick up Yarrow's book for $9.95. And then pass it onto a friend. As Yarrow writes, "It's your planet — take good care of it." |
